Human Impacts on Marine Fisheries 

A Faculty Development Institute

The Institute’s purpose:

  • Provide science and natural resource faculty with knowledge and strategies for adaptation of:
    • Comprehensive classroom-ready natural resource curriculum modules focused on the current state of marine fisheries
    • Field and laboratory activities that support education of natural resource students in marine fisheries topics
    • Instructional materials based on an ecosystems approach
  • Supply resources that can be used in the classroom when teaching students topics covered at the Institute
  • Establish a mentoring network for use by participants in adaptation of relevant NCSR curriculum materials

Who should attend:

  • Two and four-year college faculty in natural resource programs (e.g. forestry, fisheries, wildlife) or in areas that support these programs (environmental science, biology, and physical science)
  • Individuals at institutions where there is an interest in developing or revising an ecosystem-based natural resource program or courses with a marine fisheries component

Planned topics:

  • Marine Fisheries – Decline: Status, Causes, Impact and Proposed Solutions
  • Atlantic cod – a case study of mismanagement
  • Source of seafood and its relation to world-wide fish populations
  • Estuary ecosystems –
    • Aquaculture
    • Nursery function for commercially-important species
    • Conducting juvenile fish surveys
    • Wetland restoration activities
  • Farming shrimp – its impact on the environment
  • Seminar on current fisheries research

Presenters:

  • The Institute is under the direction of Wynn W. Cudmore, Ph.D., NCSR’s Principal Investigator
  • Jan Hodder, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Marine Biology, University of Oregon
  • Marine research scientist subject matter experts

The Setting:

The Human Impacts on Marine Fisheries Institute (OIMB) will be held at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, a University of Oregon marine biological laboratory located on the southern Oregon coast.  OIMB is the perfect location for the institute providing excellent laboratories and field sites. The five-day event will include both field- and classroom-based activities.

What will be provided:

  • The Institute is restricted to 12 faculty, creating a unique learning environment with ample opportunity to participate in activities
  • Materials designed to facilitate adaptation will be provided to each participant
  • Participants will receive:
    • Lodging at OIMB
    • Travel for field activities
    • Meals starting with dinner on Sunday 8/2 through lunch on Friday 8/7
    • A $600 stipend
  • Participants/educational institutions must provide for travel to Charleston, Oregon

The Schedule:

  • Participants should plan to arrive at Charleston not later than 4:00pm on August 2, 2009
  • The first session will begin on Sunday, August 2 at 6:00 p.m.
  • The final session will end on Friday, August 7 at 12:00 noon
