Land Use Impacts on Environmental Quality

The Institute’s purpose:

  • Provide science and natural resource faculty with knowledge and strategies for adaptation of:

    1. Comprehensive classroom-ready natural resource curriculum modules
    2. Field and laboratory activities that support education of natural resource students
    3. Instructional materials based on an ecosystems approach
  • Supply resources that can be used in the classroom when teaching students

  • Establish a mentoring network for use by participants in adaptation of NCSR curriculum materials

Who should attend:

  • Two and four-year college faculty in natural resource programs (e.g. forestry, fisheries, wildlife) or in areas that support these programs (environmental science, biology, and physical science)

  • Individuals at institutions where there is an interest in developing or revising an ecosystem-based natural resource program or courses

Planned topics:

  • Use of digital imagery to evaluate land use impacts

  • Effects of non-point pollution on water quality

  • Impacts of land use change over time

  • The ecological role of fire

  • Evaluation of forest recovery after disturbance

Presenters:

  • The Institute is under the direction of Wynn W. Cudmore, Ph.D., NCSR’s Principal Investigator

  • Subject matter experts in various discipline areas

The Setting:

Chemeketa Community College is located in the central Willamette Valley approximately 50 miles south of Portland, Oregon. The college has modern natural resource laboratories and access to numerous field locations that provide an excellent environment for Institute activities.

What will be provided:

  • The Institute is restricted to 16 faculty, creating a unique learning environment with ample opportunity to participate in activities

  • Materials designed to facilitate adaptation will be provided to each participant

  • Participants will receive:

    1. Lodging in Salem at a local hotel (arrangements will be made through the Center)
    2. Travel for field tours and locally to the College
    3. Daily lunches and some evening meals
    4. A $600 stipend
  • Participants/educational institutions must provide for travel to the Salem area

The Schedule:

  • Participants should plan to arrive at the designated hotel not later than 4:00pm on July 13th

  • The first session will begin on Sunday, July 13 at 5:00 p.m.

  • The final session will end on Friday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m.
