on Northwest Plants and Animals

Gardening With Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest, An Illustrated Guide.
Arthur R. Kurckeberg.

The best down reference as to what works and what doesn't in utilizing our native plants. Includes lists of plants for shade, for wet ground, trees, shrubs, groundcovers.

Hortus Northwest, A Pacific Northwest Native Plant, Plant Directory and Journal.
Pacific Habitat Services, Salem, Oregon. 503-399-9601.

Once you know the native plants you want, this magazine can help you locate them, especial if they're not available in local nurseries. Also runs articles on various restoration topics.

Northwest Trees, Identifying and Understanding the Region's Native Trees.
Arno and Hammerly.

Lots of details, natural history and human uses of the trees you plant in your schoolyard.

Amphibians of Washington and Oregon.
Leonard, Brown, Janes, McAllister, Storm. Seattle Audubon Society Trailside Series.

Since amphibians can be the first to show up at a schoolyard habitat offering, it's nice to know who your visitors are. Excellent photos.

Cascade/Olympic Natural History Trailside Reference.
Raven Editions, Portland Audubon.

Though limited to the wetter western parts of our region, I included this because of the marvelous anecdotes and tidbits which accompany many of his entries. Covers everything from fungi to porcupines to kinds of lava.

Northwest Weeds.

Then again, it's worthwhile knowing some of the uninvited visitors who show up at your naturescaping site. Some are quite pretty, some are useful to wildlife, and some are a pain. Also a useful reference for studying abandoned lots or fields. Good color photos.

A Field Guide to the common Plants. Birds and Mammals of the Portland and Beaverton Area
Beaverton School District Publication. $5.00

A bargain reference for the basic northwestern plants and animals. Well-drawn blackline pictures are easy to reproduce.

Hatchet, Hands and Hoe, Planting the Pioneer Spirit.
Erica Calklns.

Useful for cultural studies of northwest plants. Which plants were brought here by the early Euro-American settlers, and which native plants did they learn to use.
